Staphylococcus simulans: An emerging cutaneous pathogen

چکیده
Fig 1. Clinical picture of S simulans infection. Violaceous erythema of the dorsal right great toe with an overlying mildly fluctuant nodule and central superficial erosion. INTRODUCTION Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), once an umbrella term for normal skin microbiota, are increasingly implicated in hospital-acquired infections. Quick, easy, and accurate speciation of CoNS via matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization timeof-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) was recently validated. Integrating this technology into hospital laboratories has allowed multiple members of the genus to surface as potential human pathogens. We report a case of Staphylococcus simulans causing a skin and soft tissue infection to alert dermatologists to this emerging CoNS pathogen.

Vertebral osteomyelitis and native valve endocarditis due to Staphylococcus simulans: a case report
BACKGROUND Staphylococcus simulans is a common animal pathogen that occasionally can colonize human skin. Unlike other coagulase-negative staphylococci, S. simulans tends to cause more severe infections that resemble those caused by S. aureus. We present a case of vertebral osteomyelitis and endocarditis due to S. simulans. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of vertebral ost...
متن کاملAntiphagocytic effect of the capsule of Staphylococcus simulans.
An encapsulated strain of Staphylococcus simulans was observed to be more resistant to phagocytosis by human granulocytes than was a nonencapsulated strain. Phagocytosis of the encapsulated strain was enhanced by antisera to S. simulans, but opsonic activity of antisera was removed by absorption with S. simulans capsular material. The encapsulated strain of S. simulans was also more invasive th...
متن کاملHomology of mecA gene in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus haemolyticus and Staphylococcus simulans to that of Staphylococcus aureus.
A penicillin-binding protein of molecular weight 76,000 inducible by beta-lactams was detected in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus haemolyticus and Staphylococcus simulans. DNA from these strains hybridized to the mecA gene from Staphylococcus aureus; however, the chromosomal HindIII fragments containing the mecA genes were 3.4 kilobases in S. haemolyticus and 4.3 kilobases in S. simulans.
متن کاملCoagulase-negative staphylococci-emerging mastitis pathogens.
Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) have become the most common bovine mastitis isolate in many countries and could therefore be described as emerging mastitis pathogens. The prevalence of CNS mastitis is higher in primiparous cows than in older cows. CNS are not as pathogenic as the other principal mastitis pathogens and infection mostly remains subclinical. However, CNS can cause persisten...
متن کاملDraft Genome Sequence of Staphylococcus simulans UMC-CNS-990, Isolated from a Case of Chronic Bovine Mastitis
Coagulase-negative staphylococci are frequently isolated from cases of subclinical bovine mastitis. Reported here is a draft genome sequence of Staphylococcus simulans UMC-CNS-990, an isolate recovered from a chronic intramammary infection of a Holstein cow. Unexpectedly, a cluster of genes encoding gas vesicle proteins was found within the 2,755-kb genome.
